The Story of the Maidenhair Tree

I love trees. And yes, I hug them. I also love stories. Can you hug a story? Maybe more metaphoric than literal? Although, I have been know to clutch a book or two. I digress.

I once was told the story of a maidenhair tree (aka gingko tree). It was a short story, with strong clear themes of resiliency, fragility, permanence, and impermanence. All told through the life of a 1,000 year old tree. It bore witness to magnificent creation and horrific destruction. There was a period when it stood alone, the only living thing for miles. It survived. It thrived. It told the story of being alive. The story changed me. I often think about that tree. I also think about the genus of the storytelling. It was:

  • Simple
  • Short
  • Universal
  • Contextual
  • Easily retold
